Little Actors

ACTING THROUGH IMAGINATION

Grades K-1ST

This fun-filled class will introduce beginning actors to the art of working together through theatre games and classic stories.  Students will learn to use their bodies and voices to transform stories into plays.  There will be an opportunity for parents to observe on the last day of class.

PLAY IN A DAY 

Grades 2nd-3rd

This fast-paced dynamic class will teach & refine important acting skills while concluding each day with a wacky 10-minute performance for families.  Projection, physical expression & dynamic acting will be encouraged through new scripts & classic Americana songs.

Actors Essentials

The ability to be free, open, & ready to explore are essentials skills for an actor at any age. Improv, theatre games, & vocal/physical/emotional exercises invite students to discover the concepts behind creating three-dimensional characters, understanding environment, and finding confidence in their personal performance.

Collaborative Creation

Learn, create, perform – together! Tackle team building skills & learn to work as an ensemble all while creating an original work for friends and family! Students will also learn how to take constructive notes from a director in preparation for their performance on the final day of class!

The Professional Actors Toolbox

 Level 2

The best actors understand how to access the mental & the emotional in their work. Taught by a rotation of professional actors, this dynamic class uses text analysis, Meisner technique/emotional core work, & cold-reading/audition skills to provide students with the must-have tools necessary to compete in the professional world.

THE COLLEGE BOUND ACTOR

The college bound actor needs solid tools to get through a stressful college audition process with confidence. In this 4-week specialty class, Juniors & Seniors will work one monologue personally chosen by ATC staff, learn the art of searching for their own monologues, & practice interview skills that will assure a polished audition at any school.

Improvisation 

Level 1

Through improv students learn the value of saying “Yes, and…” to every idea, using their imaginations & creative energy to become confident storytellers.  This class will culminate in a final short-form improvised performance for friends & family.

Intermediate Improvisation

 Level 2

Returning students will learn to create original scenes through long-form improvisation. A focus on believability allows humor to come from honest choices rather than “going for the joke”. This class will feature a long-form improvised final performance for friends & family.

“NO EXPLANATION” COMEDY TROUPE

Level 3

The ATC Comedy Troupe, “No Explanation”, represents our most advanced improvisers who have proven ready to perform for the public.  This troupe will write an original sketch comedy revue, developed through improv, which will be showcased in Chicago on  Saturday, Feb 3.

 (No class: 11/18, 11/25, 12/23 – 1/6/18)

Prerequisite: Improvisation, Intermediate Improvisation, & instructor approval.

Students must be available for performances & are expected to attend all class sessions & tech rehearsals.

This essential class provides a comprehensive introduction to on camera technique. Students will shoot in our professional studio, work from actual industry copy, & analyze their own work as it is played back each week.

Designed for actors with a fundamental understanding of acting for the camera, this next on camera course turns its focus to telling stories simply & making subtle yet specific choices by creating real-world situations through film & television scripts.

Musical Theatre

Acting Through Song

Musical theatre performances are powerful when song furthers both the character’s journey & the play’s central story.  This class takes the five W’s (who, what, where, when and why) & applies them to song.  This class will culminate in a final performance for friends & family.

The College Bound Actor: Musical Theatre

College bound actors with a focus in musical theatre are invited to join this supplementary course. Students will work one song personally chosen by ATC staff, expand their “book”, & ensure their selected pieces are college-ready. Open to Juniors & Seniors.  May be taken following The College Bound Actor or as a stand-alone class.

Musical Theatre Lab at the Actors Training Center

The MT Lab offers students an intensive and inclusive environment in which to develop, synthesize, attack, & practice their craft as actors specializing in musical theatre. In a collaborative environment led by Chicago’s finest musical theatre talent, students will gain the essential tools and critical confidence not only to understand musical theatre as an art form, but to set themselves apart from their peers in artistry & technique as we guide them on a strong path to be working professionals in Chicago’s theatre community & beyond.
