Little Actors

PLAYTIME

Level 1
Ages 3-5

Each week in this warm, playful class, children will be led through the performance of a new story. Music, movement, and acting principles will be taught in an engaging, no-pressure environment. There will be silliness and delight for everyone.

ACTING THROUGH IMAGINATION

Level 1
Grades K-1ST

This fun-filled class will introduce beginning actors to the art of working together through theatre games and classic stories.  Students will learn to use their bodies and voices to transform stories into plays.  There will be an opportunity for parents to observe on the last day of class.

This fast-paced dynamic class will teach and refine important acting skills while concluding each day with a wacky 10-minute performance for families.  Projection, physical expression and dynamic acting will be encouraged through new scripts and classic Americana songs.

Actors Essentials

Level 1

This core class breaks down the most challenging steps for the young actor. Students will explore vocal, physical, and emotional details that lead to creating three-dimensional characters and scenes.

Improvisation

Level 1

Through improv, students learn the value of saying “Yes, and…” to every idea, using their imaginations and creative energy to become confident storytellers. This class will culminate in a final short-form improvised performance for friends and family.

A specific skill set is required for a powerful, truthful on-camera performance. This essential skills class provides a comprehensive overview of on-camera technique.  Students will work shoot in our professional studio, work from actual commercial copy, analyze their work as it is played back each week.

The Professional Actors Toolbox

 Level 2

Advanced students will work on solidifying a strong and dependable ‘tool kit’ of master skills with a rotation of ATC teachers focusing on vocal technique, text analysis, spatial awareness, strength, and stamina.   This jam-packed class is designed with a keen eye for the actor ready to hit the streets and start working. (No class: 11/13, 11/27)

Discovering the Inner Life of a Play

Level 3
9TH GRADE – ADULT

This class is for continuing students who are ready to work and change the way they look at scripts. For eight weeks, actors will read, analyze, and search for hidden clues buried inside the text of a popular contemporary play. As an ensemble, they will open up a rich world within the play while putting technique learned in previous classes on their feet. (No class: 11/22)

Sketch Comedy Writing

 Level 1

This 4-week workshop introduces students to the art of creating sketch comedy – from good writing habits and the various structures of sketch comedy to methods of generating material and how to pitch those ideas to a group. Students will leave this class with a working knowledge of the basics and are encouraged to repeat this course for mastery.

“NO EXPLANATION” COMEDY TROUPE

Level 2

The ATC Comedy Troupe, “No Explanation”, represents our most advanced improvisers who have proven ready to perform for the public.  This troupe will write an original sketch comedy revue, developed through improv, which will be showcased at the Stage 773 in Chicago on Saturday, January 28th at 5pm. (No class: 11/12, 11/26, 12/17 – 12/31)

Prerequisite: Improvisation, Sketch Comedy Writing, and instructor approval.

Students must be available for performances and are expected to attend all class sessions and tech rehearsals.

Level 2

A successful commercial audition requires savvy improvisational skills as well the ability to make bold and truthful choices. TV/FILM TECHNIQUE

Level 2

Specifically designed to create real-world situations using film and television scripts, this 4-week class has actors focusing on relaxing in front of the camera, telling the story simply and making subtle, yet specific choices.

Advanced On Camera

Level 3

Taught by PR Casting Assistant Sarah Charipar, this class challenges the advanced on camera actor to deepen their work for the most truthful on camera performance. Founder Carole Dibo and industry guests will step in as guest teachers during the session. (No class: 11/12, 11/26)

Musical Theatre

Musical theatre performances are powerful when song furthers both the character’s journey and the play’s central story.  This class takes the five W’s (who, what, where, when and why) and applies them to song.  This class will culminate in a final performance for friends and family.

Workshopping A Musical

Level 2

Students will spend 9 weeks analyzing and rehearsing songs and scenes from a musical – with an emphasis on the process of creating a character and understanding the character’s arc. Students will have an opportunity to truly step into a role, see different interpretations, and understand how a character grows & changes in a show by analyzing their character’s through-line. (No class: 11/12, 11/26)

Musical Theatre Lab at the Actors Training Center

Level 3

The MT Lab offers students an intensive and inclusive environment in which to develop, synthesize, attack, and practice their craft as actors specializing in musical theatre. In a collaborative environment led by Chicago’s finest musical theatre talent, students will gain the essential tools and critical confidence not only to understand musical theatre as an art form, but to set themselves apart from their peers in artistry and technique as we guide them on a strong path to be working professionals in Chicago’s theatre community and beyond.
